In doing this line of work, you are exposed to a mind-numbing amount of talent that emanates from what seems to be a continuously younger generation of up-and-coming artists and producers. As I sit here in my pajamas with my headphones on and a cup of tea alongside me, a perfect portrait of a 27-year-old writing about said musicians who weren't even born until I was well into my elementary school years, it is pretty easy to descend into envious territory. Instead of wasting energy on such a useless emotion, though, I have made a conscious effort to focus all energy on spreading the word on these incredible musicians. One such musician is 19-year-old (!) Sam Knowles, also known as Karma Kid. Hailing from the UK, this young artisan has been churning out bass-house tunes with such skill and finesse that it has even had musical heavyweights such as Annie Mac sit up and take notice. With a new EP just around the corner, the time has come for Karma Kid to unveil his exciting new work to the world. Premiered today on i-D online, his latest work, "Between Sheets", is a slight departure from the strong house roots of his back catalogue. Karma Kid flirts within the realms of sensuality with jazzy piano arrangements and sultry vocal distortions that show a maturity beyond his years, and a willingness to work outside of his comfort zone. The second track is another tune lifted from Karma Kid's upcoming EP; however, this time we are featuring a remix from Roche Musique label-mate, Kartell. Fans of Hillydilly may recognise that name as we featured his incredible Sapphire EP last week, and he is quickly becoming one of our current favourites. Kartell takes an almost minimal approach to his remix of "Like I'm On Fire", muting most of the constituents of the original and inserting a throbbing bass drum and hand-percussion to accentuate the house elements. Just when you think you have this remix down, though, Kartell pulls the rug out from under you as he drives the remix into chillstep territory for its final act. It's an inspired, genre-bending take on an already amazing song. The 2nd of February is when you can get your hands on the Like I'm On Fire EP, out on the Parisian label Roche Musique, but while you wait, be sure to descend enjoyably into the two tracks listed below.
