Just Jack

Minefield

Just Jack is taking the indie route for his latest EP, Winning, after releasing his last two albums (Overtones and All Night Cinema) on Mercury Records. It's been six years since Jack released his last full-length (the latter of the two listed works), and two-years since his independently released four-track EP, Rough/Ready, so we can only assume the Brighton-based singer-songwriter has been enjoying life, gathering experience, and letting his musical inspiration come when it comes. Allowing this creative process to grow naturally is the best when it comes to creating art, and, as the four tracks on Winning suggest, they're sounding like they were created in an easygoing, non-forced space as the music is birthed from nothingness into breezy, disco-accented guitar arrangements and smooth, positive-sounding vocals that round out each track with undeniable feel-good vibes. We've already heard the repeat-worthy EP title track, "Winning", and now rounding out the rest of the body of work are three new songs that each hold their own, making this EP and must-hear. From the toe-tapping pop-funk of "Droids", to the arpeggiating, house-leaning electronic of "Inside", and hook-laden, electro-bliss of "Minefield", there's not a single let down here, and as far as favourite EPs of the year goes, this one definitely ranks at the top.
