It is not every day you find an artist consistently releasing high-quality new music, but this week, the burgeoning star known as JABS has served up two new tracks that sound completely different from one another but manage to evoke a specific sound that is all her own. The newer of the two tracks, "Life Don't Sleep", is a Wilough-assisted, Nick Hakim-produced experimental-R&B track that becomes a quiet anthem as it evolves. Wilough proclaims over JABS' light piano chords, "Life don't sleep when the lights are off / People talk to me, but I don't respond". The song is expertly crafted and fits the direction that Wilough is headed. The older of JABS' new material here is a departure from the R&B sound apparent on "Life Don't Sleep." Entitled "Chinese", it's more house, more upbeat, but about a relaxed subject matter, too. JABS is capitalizing on the newer youth culture that's emerged. The KAASI-produced track has JABS beseeching her partner to just hang out, watch movies, and order some Chinese food, and such a simple concept pairs beautifully with the shimmering beats and complex layering of her sounds.
