As we observe several emerging vocalists and producers excel in the "future" R&B domain, there are a handful of artists who’re already ahead of the game, one being New York based singer-songwriter I/O, who’s latest piece entitled “Face With No Name” is profoundly gripping. It’s been two years since the solo act dropped his first mixtape, Isolations, and now he looks to drop his second one in due time. The aforementioned cut commences with an enigmatic lead that consists of auto-tuned chants, evolving sirens, and a sedating, hat-heavy drum beat that then make way for the highly potent, poignant vocals of I/O that drift unhurriedly through the ever-infiltrating backdrop. What particularly stands out about the gem is its suave progression, complete with subtle bass lines and evolving synths slipping in and complementing the overpowering lyricism beautifully—in turn giving the entire piece a highly distinct spirit. As the track reaches its concluding phase, too, a sudden pause gives way to an outro that sees one last, wistful verse surrounded by the mentioned sirens and slow-moving drums. The whole effort itself is quite intricate in its structure, making for an unbeatable listen if you're a sucker for R&B. [via The FADER]
