The term "pop music" is, at its essence, an abbreviation of the larger phrase "popular music", but we're currently seeing some of the most tasteful, artistic, creative songs labeled as such—despite the pejorative view of the genre. There's been a drastic shift in the meaning of it, for sure, and if you're one that still thinks condescendingly of it in the artistic sense, you ought to reshape your attitude for the new few minutes, because there's absolutely nothing superficial or unimpressive about the dark pop London singer-songwriter INCA has here put together. The artist is kicking off her career with a tranquil, yet emotive ballad called "Wake Me Up", and while, instrumentally, the song is fairly minimal (it makes sparing use of the piano, guitar, violins, and steady percussive slaps), it's INCA's breathtaking croon that's the real showstopper here. She jumps from deep, elegant tones up to high-pitched ones with ease, and it's difficult not to be impressed by the dynamic and employment of it throughout. "Wake Me Up" is certainly one of the more promising debuts we've heard in a while, and with an EP on the way, we think INCA is definitely going to be one to keep high on your new artist radar.
