It's becoming harder for us to find an answer when people ask what type of music we listen to, because as of late, genres are being meshed like never before. Our most recent genre-blending example is Old Charter here—an act composed of Ivan "Honey" Silva and David "Bones" Mikkelson—and they have a rather unique method of creating their music. Ivan records some guitar and bass tracks, and he then sends them from California over to David in Idaho, who produces and sings over them. It's a somewhat unusual procedure, but it's working excellently for them, and this fact is very obvious with their new EP, Old Charter. The two state that their music is considered "dreamy garage pop", and in case you're wondering what that sounds like, their first track on the EP, "Ketamine", is a shining example. Bright, fresh, and crisp, the song is created on a foundation of a heavy beat, glowing synth melodies, and energizing vocals. The third song, "Roger", has a mellower sound than the previous one, and it makes good use of sporadic guitar bits and piano keys. "F5", meanwhile, while only an instrumental, is a really good one. David's choppy production style is brilliant on it, and the way he manipulates the female vocals is admirable. Bringing the project to its conclusion is "My Past", and though it's undoubtedly the mellowest song of the bunch, that's exactly why we love it. Ivan's smooth guitar is sublime, and the eclectic sonic nuances that occur throughout are absolutely enchanting. As a relatively unknown act, Honey Bones have blown us away with their distinct, highly enjoyable sound, and as a result, we encourage you to check their tracks below and pick up their project on Bandcamp.
