Holy Holy — House of Cards

Holy Holy

House of Cards

The backstory of Australian band Holy Holy is an interesting one. As expatriates living in Stockholm and Berlin, Timothy Carroll, a singer-songwriter out of Brisbane, and Oscar Dawson, a guitarist and composer hailing from Melbourne, demoed tracks in all manners and in all available spaces between the two cities. And after returning to Australia to record, we got our first taste of their 70's folk-rock-inspired aesthetic as they released their impressive debut single, "Impossible Like You". A long nine months later from that time, and we finally have the pleasure of wrapping our ears around their follow-up single, "House of Cards". Now, is it a coincidence that they decided to release their highly anticipated second single in the same week that the popular Netflix drama of the same name released their highly anticipated second season? Probably. Nevertheless, it's a fortuitous circumstance for the band. And yet, unlike the televised protagonist, Francis Underwood, there's nothing machiavellian about this particular "House of Cards". This one is a forthright romp of folk-tinged indie-rock that demonstrates the impeccable talent Holy Holy possesses.
