By now, you ought to be aware of Canadian production trio Unlikely Futures. Members Nick Chomps, Max Zims, and J Remedy have been putting out powerful, bass-packed productions for some time now, and their recent works (including a must-hear remix of Drake's "Too Much") have been enlarging in the SoundCloud community and beyond. Really, there's no questioning the talented touch the three have at this point—their ethereal, hard-hitting brand of electronic is both iconic, and ever-expanding—and on their latest piece, a poignant remix of Grimes' "Genesis", all their impressively imposing sound comes again alive. Perhaps more strictly instrumental-sounding than a lot of their previous works, "Genesis" here focuses more meticulously on drums and vocal chops than it does on other, previous efforts. To be sure, the track starts in an alluring, exceptionally foreboding fashion—utilizing an ethereal and gradually intensifying vocal loop to build suspense for what swooshing strikes follow—and quickly afterwards, UF's staple bass inclusion kicks in, though, with a noticeably darker tone than usual. It's able to adjoin itself neatly into the atmosphere, however, and it never once loses its menacing bite throughout. It thrives in the way it bolsters the song-long sample of Grimes' and teeming chords behind her, and it generally just billows, as per usual. What impactful electronic arises from all the additions has us nodding our heads indefinitely, not least because of the sound itself, but too because it testifies to the increasingly impressive and poignant sound the guys emit with each and every release of theirs. Big-name remixes have seemed to become somewhat of a specialty for the three, too, as we see again here, and it's hard to believe that if they keep doing them to the excellence here exuded, that they won't be seeing some more, official ones to work on in the future.
