Grace Mitchell began turning heads in the music industry about a year ago when she uploaded "Broken Over You" and "Your Design" to SoundCloud, and, among those caught in the attention of the two singles was Republic Records who featured her on the Walter Mitty soundtrack and also released Design, her debut EP. Mitchell's powerful voice and prodigious songwriting ability invite comparisons to Lorde or BANKS, but her latest EP, Raceday, sees her sound evolve and expand into one that's her own—and extremely impressive. Songs like the electric "NoLo" sum up the spirit of Raceday, bringing an imaginative flair and bonafide swagger to Mitchell's vivid songs that take them to a whole new level. The high point of the EP is easily "Jitter", however, a highly dance-worthy and completely unorthodox tune premiered yesterday on Beats 1. Combining a grime-influenced beat on the verse with dancehall pianos and a bit of French in the chorus, "Jitter" makes the kind of first impression that marks a defining moment in her young career, and, along with the other efforts on the EP, will certainly help in catapulting the star that Grace Mitchell is becoming before our eyes.
