When you think of the role the harp plays in popular music, most people would be hard-pressed to think of an artist off the top of their heads that use the instrument as the driving force of their musical composition. That’s not to say the harp hasn’t been around, though. Musicians such as Joanna Newsom and Active Child have used it with great success, and you can now add Utah singer-songwriter Goldmyth to that short but esteemed list. Featured on the site last week with the driving pop of her debut single, “Lover’s Letdown”, Goldmyth is back this time with her first EP, Faded Dream. The album artwork, itself, is a visual introduction to the work, as the dreamy haze of the image is echoed within the first bars of opening track, “Has To Be Better”. As the song continues, too, the mist begins to lift to reveal the catchy lyrics we’ve come to expect, and an uptempo energy that sustains through “Lover’s Letdown” and continues into the intricate percussion collective of “Ghost in Mind” ensues. The opening three songs on Faded Dream display an undisputed skill in crafting tight, concise indie-pop compositions, but it is the back half of this release that shows Goldmyth’s prowess in her songwriting abilities. The gorgeous harmony of indie-folk melodies on “Holy Rope”, and the harp-plucked tenderness of title track, “Faded Dream”, show a different side to the artist—an earnest fragility in her lyrics and vocal delivery that seem beyond the years of an artist early in her career.
