Ever since G-Eazy released his first mixtape back in 2008, his music has possessed an array of different traits, but it's been pretty rare to hear a darker side of his sound. The Californian resident originally gained attention for his creative beats and quirky, fun rapping style, but his last album, These Things Happen, opened the door into a deeper set of thoughts and emotions. Now with his more shadowy second album, When It's Dark Out, he's created a layered body of work with depth. G-Eazy continually reflects on the struggles of fame throughout his new album here, and even on radio-ready cuts like "Me, Myself and I", we hear him project cold and lonely thoughts. Our favorite track from the work happens to be the Too $hort-featuring "Of All Things", in fact, but the entire album is packed with such incredible and consistently well-constructed work that we won't hesitate to give it all our approval. It's certainly one of the better rap efforts of the year, at least, and G-Eazy has definitely signified with it that he's to be taken more seriously that you ever previously thought.
