Fredson Jacobs — Neon

Fredson Jacobs

Neon

Fredson Jacobs' "Neon" is filled with tons of funky samples and interesting effects, but it's not one of those songs that strays too far off the beaten path. It's the perfect combination of a good melody and experimental sound layering, and what you get to listen to after it's all been mixed together is a track that grabs you in much the same way that a pop song does, while still managing to avoid the mundane repetitiveness that you get when a hook gets recycled too many times. Freed from the shackles of formula, Fredson Jacobs has used his artistic liberty to full effect on this one, and the way he was able to cram so much into a short four-minute time frame is quite impressive. Listen for the slow-rolling, heavily distorted synth chords as they compete for attention with the mechanical clicks and pings that pop up here and there. Theres an underlying tension to the track, but the approach is ultimately a success, and "Neon" is all the more impressive because of it.
