We are undoubtedly living in one of the most exciting times for new music. The advent of computer technology has ushered in a new era of musical artistry and creativity, and an individual who is leading this charge in 2016 is, of course, Flume. Over the past few years, the Australian visionary and producer has collaborated with the likes of Chet Faker, George Maple, How To Dress Well, and has remixed the likes of Disclosure and Lorde. In short, Flume had a lot to live up to whilst creating his sophomore LP, Skin, but, happily, absolutely no sophomore slump can be found. From start to finish, Skin is like a looking glass into the future. On KUČKA-featuring "Numb & Getting Colder", Flume's remarkable ear for production is found, as the effort is one of the more offbeat, unconventional ones on the album. Little Dragon makes an appearance on the album as well on song "Take a Chance", which is one of the project's more pop-leaning tracks and most poignant overall. Rap plays a huge role on this album as well, and that's a fact we're absolutely fascinated by. The Vic Mensa-featuring "Lose It" is huge in and of itself, as it brings together walls of Flume's signature synths and Mensa's commanding, prodigious verses, and Flume's track with Allan Kingdom and Raekwon, "You Know", as well brings about a bubbling, formidable effort. His production on the track is diminutive and easy, and that bodes exceptionally well for Raekwon and Kingdom's traded verses throughout. Smaller acts like KUČKA and Kai were recruited to lend their voices to songs on Skin, which will undoubtedly elevate their status in the industry, but well-known names like AlunaGeorge, Beck, and Tove Lo are featured collaborators as well, showcasing Flume's ability to recognize talent, whether they're just starting out, or in the throes of celebrity. The collaborations are offset by a few solo tracks like "Wall Fuck", "Pika", and "Free", however, which allow listeners to delve into the inner workings of Flume's finesse. This year has already been a huge one for new music. Hundreds of equally talented individuals are producing it and collaborating with other talented artists. Flume is one that does it vastly smarter than his peers, and, as a result, Skin will be remembered as one of the best, most forward-thinking albums (and sophomore albums) of not only the year, but of some time as well.
