Nothing Happened

Though undiscovered acts and artists are coming up surprisingly often, we're still amazed by the quantity of fantastic, yet unknown music that exists. For us, there are few things more exciting than uncovering an act as incredible as Flake from the depths of the internet. Finding their album, Songs Without Words, was a fortunate occurrence, for sure, and we're thinking you'll all enjoy it as much as us. The Swiss duo has an incredibly diverse sound, and they execute each different style that they embrace brilliantly. Thierry Luethy, the production half of Flake, creates a smooth electronic foundation on "Sight" (a favorite track of ours), which consists of silky synths, a pumping beat, and plenty of slight variances. And although the album is called what it is, Isabelle Ritter (the singer) provides some gorgeous vocals over the instrumental and throughout the entire project. "Hipster Girl", meanwhile, is an effort exuding exactly what the name implies: quirkiness, a little bit of awkwardness, and intrigue. The catchy, satiric song is a work of musical brilliance, and its eclectic range of constantly varying instruments provides a fresh feel throughout. Next, Flake embraces a mellow, somewhat acoustic vibe on "My Fine Feathered Friend", but they follow this song up with a work of ingeniously crafted experimental pop in "Nothing Happened". The duo later demonstrates their mind-boggling creativity on "Everytime I Get The Shakes" and "We Are The Night", and we're willing to say that both tracks stretch into boundaries of electro-pop that are almost completely untouched. It isn't often that we discover an album of this quality but with nearly no publicity, so we're overjoyed to share Flake's debut album, Songs Without Words, with all of you. Be sure to give this one a good hard listen, because it's one of the most exciting that we've discovered this year.
