Maths Time Joy has been rather taciturn in terms of any fresh work over the past half year, but that’s far from a flaw, because it simply tells us he’s been mastering new techniques in the vast sphere of production and bettering his unmistakable brand of downtempo work. This claim is seen all the more indisputable, too, as we listen to the London-based act’s latest rendition of Electric Youth’s month-old piece, “Runaway”, in which he employs a crisp buoyancy to bolster the exquisite vocals of Bronwyn (vocalist of Electric Youth). The noteworthy piquancy of the remix is evident from the very onset, with MTJ integrating subtle slices of Bronwyn’s vocals to give a slight tease of what’s to come, and alongside picturesque chords, the piece bursts into a drop that exudes unexpected exuberance. Delineating every aspect of the drop would take a great length of time, but what particularly emerges from it is MTJ’s ability to fuse untouched percussion, abrupt laser stabs, and an alluring drum sequence to cushion the aforementioned cuts—making the effort all the more desirable.
