Imagine if Doja Cat and Cashmere Cat ever met. Imagine the kind of cat-dominated conversations that'd take place. Imagine the cat-inspired collaborations that'd inevitably ensue, especially with the former's penchant for the kind of electronic production the latter provides. OK, now stop imagining, consider hoping, and definitely start acclimating yourself to the fact that the former's released a new, Cashmere Cat-less EP today, entitled (aptly) Purrr!, with an exclamation point that suggests she knows it's a work to get excited about. Indeed, we posted the middle, Evil Needle-produced track from it, "So High", when it came out a year ago, but we're here now to highlight the final two efforts from the five-track work, the Dream Koala-assisted "No Police", and Yeti Beats' produced "Control"—each illuminating Doja's prowess for poignant beat selections, and her willingness to experiment (successfully) with different deliveries (a desirable trait in any artist). Among the two tracks, the former stands as our favorite, and with Koala's ever-dreamy "We Can't Be Friends" instrumental bolstering Doja's relaxed flow on it, it's hard for this not to have been the case. The LA singer knows what she's doing with these high-profile producers, and it tells by her not trying to do too much with what sounds of theirs she plays around with. That's not to say that she doesn't do them justice, though; her lines work, her pacing works, and her energy is both cool and calming. On "Control", especially, Doja sails atop Yeti's wavy electronic tones—taking us for a bit of a surreal-sounding tour through her effortlessly aesthetic art. It almost comes across as too doctored for aural pleasure, but that's a note defeated in wake of the overwhelmingly good vibes presented. Doja certainly provides them in abundance, maybe not with conspicuously gleeful subject matter, but spectacular sound, certainly, and when you're the kind of artist of her ilk, that's enough, right?
