Late last year, we were introduced to Jackson Phillips (Day Wave), a California-based one-man outfit and half of synth-pop duo Carousel who delighted us with his glowing debut single, “Nothing At All”. Today, we're treated to another lo-fi examination of self-worth with his latest single, “Total Zombie”. Well, it's not so much an examination as it is a proclamation, as the third line in the song, "Just turn around and let me walk away", wills his suitor in pronounceable fashion. Despite this apparent lack of confidence, however, the lament of Phillips as he claims “Only a fool would want me” during the chorus has just enough playful self-deprecation to remain endearing. This is due, in part, to his mastery of surf-pop riffs and catchy vocal hooks, and it's what helps elevate the track to its greatly attractive state. The form of Day Wave's debut EP is starting to take shape rather nicely, so be sure to keep these singles on high rotation until we are finally treated to a full release.
