It's probably come to your attention that we are suckers for vintage implementations in modern productions, and David Harks is a splendid example of one amongst a handful of artists who are well-versed in this distinctive trend. What Harks does with every piece isn’t only outlandish in its totality, but involving a well-whisked mixture of soul and pop, with an almost deceiving electronic undertone. We immersed ourselves in the Brighton-based act’s month-old piece, “We”, and we were enamored not only by the sheer ingenuity in his sound, but also by his eloquent, transfixing vocals that we still can’t seem to get enough of. On the onset of “Illusion” David instills all sorts of sonic anticipation. Letting a couple of percussive notes plod along, the artist dives straight into the first verse, employing a transforming snare roll, gentle kicks, and ageless chord progressions to chaperone those rich, wholehearted vocals of his. A spontaneous yet smooth transition into the momentary chorus will have you tapping your foot repeatedly, and within a few seconds, the man leaps in for the second verse that welcomes a spacey synth which eventually backtracks to the initial verse’s instrumentation. The whole piece see-saws amongst these inclusions sublimely, and the ever-changing, subtle structure will have you listening to this tune many a time.
