Kygo's official remix for Coldplay's "Midnight" isn't a complete surprise when one considers the announcement a while back that the 22-year-old Norwegian would be working with Chris Martin, but there were some big question marks as to what the actual track would come out sounding like. "Midnight" isn't exactly the type of song that Kygo normally works with, but when the front man for one of the biggest bands in the world comes knocking with a remix offer, it's advisable you at least give it a shot, and that's what Kygo did. As it turns out, any apprehension about Kygo's end result was unfounded, because, again, he's proven capable of crafting sounds that will fit well with almost any genre. Unlike his M83 remix, this one doesn't try to move you with that soft grandeur he so adeptly cultivates; rather, it explores deeper levels of subtlety that the toned down production work in the original already encouraged. The melodies aren't quite as obvious this time around, but they're still there, and they blend in perfectly with the soft drums and even softer ambient textures that fill the background with a nicely muted darkness. We're glad Kygo isn't too stuck in his ways and is still willing to take on new challenges (as this remix so obviously indicates), because it's with the kind of music that he's able to interest old and new fans alike.
