Whenever you see a rapper blow up, usually what follows are songs that start surfacing from the woodworks that are of the "unreleased" variety (see: Kanye West). As is the case for this newly surfaced Apollo Brown-produced track, "The Writer", we can only speculate on its origin, because we don't really know where it came from or what it's a part of (if anything at all). Based on the sonic quality of the track alone, it sounds like it's never been properly mastered, so one can only assume that it's been sitting on some hard drive with no real plan for release. Regardless of its roots, though, what we find here is another example of Chance The Rapper's lyrical dexterity. And, as we know from Apollo Brown's production track-record, the guy is one of the best at producing sample-led, hip-hop beats that classify under that "boom bap" sound, so to hear Chance flex out over a track like this one is refreshing, to say the least.
