The master of progressive electronica, Dan Snaith, is back. After a brief departure recording and touring as "Daphni", Snaith has returned to his Caribou moniker and delivered us the first taste of his upcoming record with "Can't Do Without You". Caribou's 2010 LP, Swim, was not only one of the best albums to be released that year, but has since become the paragon for progressive dance records; essentially, the yardstick by which all future releases would be compared. A follow-up to such a revered body of work can be a daunting task, for sure, but this release shows promise that Caribou is indeed producing a worthy successor. Snaith plays to his strengths on "Can't Do Without You"; utilising the same progressive synths, percussion builds, and tender vocal loops that made Swim so successful. Some may criticise that Caribou is just replicating the same tried and tested formula over again with this new single, but if your favourite artist just released a new song that would sit comfortably with his best record to date, can that ever be a bad thing?
