Creating music is often a cathartic exercise. It provides a blank slate, allowing you to fully examine thought and feeling as you compose a tangible manifestation of self-help therapy. If you possess the talent and are willing to be truly honest with yourself, the manifestation you are left with can become an accomplished work of art, as was the case with Melbourne band Canary. Featuring members that are former born-again Christians, they allowed the explorations of the more harmful aspects of organised religion and the disillusions that come with the perceptions of misplaced faith act as part of the thematic mortar that binds their 2011 debut album, Dear Universe. As it comes time for album number two, it seems therapy is back in session, except this time, there's a slight shift from the breakdown of religious relationships to something of a more personal nature. With brilliant new single “Women’s Business”, we have our latest glimpse into their forthcoming album as well as the refined direction that Canary is heading in as a band. The musicianship on offer has poise and purpose, with a delightfully verbose percussion arrangement that provides the rhythmic nudge that vocalist Matthew Kenneally needs. With it, he's able to dissect a suffocating union through his established style of nuance and harmony. “Women’s Business” will be available on iTunes and Spotify shortly, and later, it can be found on Canary’s sophomore album, I Am Lion, which is set for release in early 2016.
