Some of the greatest music to be released in recent years has come as a result of musical contradiction, where melodic elements in seeming opposition are woven together in a complimentary way, and Norwegian pop band Broen is the latest outfit to demonstrate their aptitude with this technique on their new single “Iris”. Broen, which also happens to be the Danish word for "bridge", remain true to their namesake as they act as the connective platform for the numerous musical influences that are present on their track. Their luminous synths, sunny vocal harmonies, and lively Britpop jangle of the guitars are all juxtaposed with an ominous horn section, jarring distortions, and a percussion track that feels almost industrial at times, and while, on paper, this shouldn't work, as the track unfolds, you can’t help but be enraptured by the thrilling euphony of sounds on display.
