It was back in May, 2014, when a little-known track named "Expectations" came fortuitously our way. It was by an artist we hadn't heard before, Brika, and it had appeared rather conspicuously to us that it was underappreciated for what musicality and sleek and stylish aesthetic it continues to bring today. Fast-forward to the present time, and "Expectations" has totaled over a million plays across platforms, rests comfortably within an array of great tracks on debut album Voice Memos, and perhaps still serves as her quintessential sound. Now, however, she's back with her first single since, and it's shining light on a new chapter of her sound that we're extremely excited to hear. Within the brand-new piece, we're privy again to what superb singing and songwriting Brika possesses (catch her incredible vocal inflections at the beginning of the track), and the production behind her, too, isn't shabby at all. Plenty of instrumentation is present to illuminate—and enhance—her vocal throughout, and it all lends a jazzy, funky, soulful edge to the number that amps its infectiousness as well. With a handful of efforts to follow this one—all which will culminate in a new EP out later this year—we remain on the cusp of Brika's new sonic wave, and, judging both by this track here and the long history of quality behind her, we know already it's one we'll want to ride out until its very end.
