Within the opening seconds of Brika's second-ever effort, "Expectations", you'll be taken aback. The Miami singer-songwriter and recent signee to Art House Records has a vocal tone that rivals the best in the indie-pop business, and it won't be tough to pull out the big-name comparisons once you've the track even partially digested. It's a ravishing affair, minimalist, but effectively expressive, and the fact that auto-tune's turned off for the track's duration is testament not only to her vocal talent, but her confidence, too. It's refreshing to see and hear, especially from an artist as young in their career as Brika is, and you get the sense while listening to her sing that she's in complete and utter control of everything she's trying to do. It's hard to articulate, the artistic intuition she sews effortlessly into her work, but it's there, alive and well and on the verge of breaking excitedly out into the mainstream. It will, too, but until it does, we'll be enjoying all the elegant executions of her work that's sure to come alongside the rise.
