There's an unparalleled dynamism found in the artistry of Bon Iver. Over the past nine years, the band has proved to be one of the most unpredictable and yet consistently talented to flourish within the music industry. Their body of work is beautifully impressive, and it has the tendency to leave an impression on listeners and other artists as well. Though there was a time when it was believed Bon Iver would not be making new music, after releasing multiple tracks this year as a featured artist it was announced at Bon Iver's own music festival, Eaux Claires, that a new album was coming. Now, that album, 22, A Million, is finally upon us, and it is perhaps the most creative Bon Iver album yet. It's difficult to unpack an album as dense and wholeheartedly created as this, and, though, as stated earlier, there are definitely tracks that are quintessential Bon Iver. "29 #Strafford APTS" is an example. It's the guitar-driven, falsetto-crooning Bon Iver that we have grown to know and love, and there is the light element of vocal alteration that has become a staple on their work as well. The triumphant "666 ʇ", meanwhile, is breathtaking and harmonious and is true to the artistry that Bon Iver has crafted for themselves. That's not to say that the album is a copy of their past work, however. "21 M♢♢N WATER" is an alien-esque, wonky track that blends in perfectly with the equally offbeat, searing track that follows ("8 (circle)"), and, in even further (and in typical fashion), the best, "00000 A Million", was saved for last. That one's the perfect closer to the album, as it's emotional, quirky, and doesn't convey a clear meaning to those hearing it through. All in all, there is no doubt Bon Iver is a musical group that has changed the course of mainstream music and what is considered popular and beloved. It is so remarkable what they are able to create, and we are all lucky to be alive at a time in which music like this is being made.
