Blackbear has been on a tear lately. Late last year, he released his best project to date in the paranoid and personal full-length Help, this year, he released the Drink Bleach EP, and now, he has returned with another EP. The Hollywood native makes music for the misunderstood. He takes the most interesting aspects of his personal life such as his upbringing in the superficial wonderland of LA, the constant tug-of-war between drugs and sobriety, and the fake friends that accompany fame, and distills them into easily digestible pieces of pop wizardry. In the EP opener, he nonchalantly sings, "I don't want to go to Kylie Jenner's party / I don't wanna go", and denounces the fakeness of his hometown. This sentiment is relatable to anybody who has looked to dodge the party scene in their hometown. He just happens to be dodging a party with a Jenner here. The six songs of cashmere noose (including incredibly titled song "spent all my money on rick owens cargo pants") are catchy, occasionally formulaic, and always interesting, and they serve as yet another example of blackbear's unique ingenuity on display.
