Best New Artists of the Month

(August 2013)

In the daily sea that is the new music storm, it's tough for anyone to keep up with all the music that's coming out. At HD we really don't want you to miss the best of the best, so to combat this ongoing problem, every month we will publish this article in hopes you never miss the best new artists. [do action="sub-heading" title="Jakubi"/] After receiving their internet start on Triple J's Unearthed website, this Melbourne 5 piece quickly rose to prominence by reaching reaching #1 on Hype Machine for both of their debut singles, "I Can't Afford It All" & "Holiday" — a pretty impressive feat to say the least. From the onset of hearing "I Can't Afford It All", you knew that Jakubi were the real deal. Packaged in between their infectious guitar melodies & hip-hop/rock cadenced lead vocals, is a sound that needs to be pushed to the masses asap. Expect to see this band making some major moves very quickly here. But if there ever was a good time to drag that adjective into dream-pop, it would be for Seoul's absolutely perfect debut, "Stay With Us". [do action="quote-right"]Seoul are one of the best new bands in music right now[/do] The way the subtle guitar chords gently ricochet between the modulating background vocal effects leaves such a succinct pocket for the lead vocals, it's really quite amazing. Listening to this track is like falling into an endless pit of bliss that you never want to get out of. While "Stay With Us" may be all we have to go on right now, the leftover residue from this track is more than enough to call Montreal's Seoul one of the best new bands in music right now. [do action="big-player-soundcloud" thepostid="30577" artist="• Seoul •" title="Stay With Us" id="103419107" link="http://soundcloud.com/seoulmtl/stay-with-us"/] [do action="sub-heading" title="Chela"/] While Chela technically may not be considered a new artist in the month of August, for many (including us), "Romanticise" was our very first in-depth look at her. She's been around since 2012, but with the release of "Romanticise", the song has laid out such a big impression on us, that not including her on this list would be a shame. [do action="quote-right"]Romanticise" is immensely palpable. It's like love at first sight[/do] The instant 'love-ability' of "Romanticise" is immensely palpable. It's like love at first sight except it will never break your heart. The more you play it, the more you love it, the more you want it to hear it everywhere you go. Seriously Universe, you better get this song out to the world en masse asap. When we look back on Chela's career 5-10 years from now, the song that will of kicked everything for her will be, "Romanticise". Seriously, watch. [do action="big-player-soundcloud" thepostid="31395" artist="Chela" title="Romanticise" id="106159840" link="http://soundcloud.com/kitsune-maison/chela-romanticise"/] [do action="sub-heading" title="Sothko"/] It's safe to say that most of us were never around to experience the 60's or 70's. While that may disappoint some of you on some sort of nostalgic level, don't worry because new artists like the Scottish singer/songwriter Marc Johansen aka Sothko, are bringing a sound back that is a throwback of an era that some regard as the best 20 years of music in the history of man. Regardless of calling "Everything Is Fine" a throwback or not, there is no denying that this song makes you feel unbelievably good & prompts you to sing along with a giant smile on your face. Lets hope we see more from Sothko because music like this needs to be made and heard. [do action="big-player-soundcloud" thepostid="30911" artist="Sothko" title="Everything Is Fine" id="102456183" link="http://soundcloud.com/sothko/everything-is-fine"/] [do action="sub-heading" title="Figaro"/] In keeping up with that throwback sound we were just talking about with Sothko, the brand new NYC act Figaro hit us at the beginning of August with their insanely addictive debut single, "Moving Slowly" It wasn't one of those songs that immediately hit you. It took a few listens to grow on you, but once it did, the falsetto part "if you want me to tell you the truth / I wanna be with you" became something you would sing out loud no matter where you were. Couple that with those guitars and you got yourself what should be a hit song on the radio. These guys have a sound that is going to be huge — the world just doesn't know it yet. So get the head start and fall in love with "Moving Slowly" (if you haven't already).
