Good hip-hop really is alive and well, no matter what the mainstream machine might have you think. Sure, there are some absolute talents repping their sound to the masses, but if you really want to find the true gems, you have to look underground, which is where artists like Audible Doctor make their bread and butter. The Summer Tape is the second in The Audible Doctor's "Season" series, entirely self-produced by one of the best working in the game today. The EP features a who's who of underground emcees, including Oddisee, Hassaan Mackey, Guilty Simpson, Edo G, Kurious, Chaundon, Francesca, & Davenport Grimes, plus for vintage souls who purchase the EP in cassette format, there's a bonus Cassette Exclusive track featuring Homeboy Sandman & Del The Funky Homosapien. This album isn't long, clocking in at just over 22 minutes, but it's chock full of classic, vintage underground hip-hop at its finest. The EP almost goes for the grand-slam, as after six of the seven songs I hadn't found myself hitting the "Skip" button once, but unfortunately the seventh song just didn't grab me like the rest did. Still, 6/7 is a pretty good record, and much, much better than anything you'd find in the mainstream. Take a listen below and reacquaint yourself with what hip-hop is supposed to sound like.
