We (along with the rest of the music blogosphere) were enamored with Aquilo‘s title track, “You There”, from their self-titled EP released in April. It was a light, stunningly serene affair we didn’t see coming (at least, not to its eventual extent), but as soon as we pressed play, we knew it was something to behold. The indie-electronic crux of their sound, authentic and embarassingly awe-inspiring, really took on a beautiful life of its own, and though it’d need no outside assistance to shape its timeless demeanor, we knew it’d see interpretation by producers fancying the featherlight sound. Much to our delight, we discovered that HD-favorite and UK producing prodigy Daktyl would be up for the task, turning in his version of the track as part of Trap Door Records’ recently rolled out series, 3am. And, as to be expected on the remix, Daktyl dives elegantly in, adding ethereal edges all the way around. Somber synths on the track’s onset usher in a truly despondent tone, and Aquilo’s vocals alongside them further the melancholy. All’s not lost to despairing vibes, however, as life-giving percussion comes to the rescue when it’s most required, giving the piece a sonic sustenence it benefits from tremendously. The rest of the remix winds down with the elements steadily intact, all in all offering a perfect listen for those wistful times of night.
