Modern musical releases seem to fall into either one of two camps: music that is made for the audience, or music that is made for the artist, and London-based singer-songwriter Aaron Taylor definitely falls into the latter category there. When listening to his debut EP, Still Life, you got the sense that he didn’t give a shit if anyone listened to it (although we’re sure he’s glad they did). It was pure musical expression, devoid of expectation and fearless when it came to entertaining more playful elements of song structure. Now, as his second EP is unleashed upon the world, we are happy to report that Aaron has not lost this mentality when it comes to his music, for it is simply great again. The Better Days' six tracks (and cheeky interlude) are positively brimming with an undeniably charm. The vocals from Taylor are faultless throughout, yet it is the composition of each track that gives this release the distinction it has. From the smooth R&B notes of “Just Gon’ Wait”, to the soul sensibilities of “If I Had To Write A Song About You” (and even the jazz-punctured beats of tongue-in-cheek track “Breakfast”), each arrangement is a different experimentation in style, yet fluid piece throughout. There are very few out who are making music like this these days, and, although maybe not palatable for all, this is craftsmanship that deserves respect.
