The Roots have always been that hip-hop group you can always be proud to be a fan of. Every time The Roots drop a new album they receive well deserved hype and How I Got Over sees the same treatment from a worldwide hip-hop fan base that always loves a new Roots album. On June 22nd How I Got Over will hit stores and digital outlets. I didn't get into the Roots until 1999 when they dropped Things Fall Apart and since that time I have really enjoyed each album with The Tipping Point and Phrenology being my favorites. The Roots last effort (Rising Down) did not ever receive much play in my ears and sadly How I Got Over is going to fall into that same category. I hate not having many positive things to say about one of the most respected groups in hip-hop but I have to keep it honest from my personal point of view. The Fire is clearly the best track off this album and I can see Right On, Now Or Never and This Day getting some quality spins. Maybe I am being too harsh but with The Roots I expect a bit more from a talented group like that. The Roots are high profile enough that this review won't stop you from buying this album or downloading it, so as always make sure you listen for your self! For fans of Dujeous, Common, Jurassic 5.
